Cords get all the attention these days due to the number of people who are cutting them, but don’t forget about keys. Not only are more people opting for keyless fobs, phone apps and smart locks, but more manufacturers (e.g. vehicle makers) are designing their products without the need for a physical key.

Whether for a home, business or automobile, keyless entry systems have their benefits. Let’s discuss some of the advantages keyless systems offer for these three core areas.

Advantages of Keyless Entry for Your Home

Keyless entry systems that utilize combinations, biometrics or even facial recognition are an option for more and more homeowners these days. Here are some of the advantages of residential keyless entry systems:

Added security: traditional keys can not only be lost, but they’re easily duplicated as well. Keyless systems use advanced technology and authentication methods that are difficult to mimic, ensuring only authorized individuals have access to your home.

More convenience: who hasn’t tried to bring in a load of groceries and had to set them down to open the door? With a keyless entry system, you can unlock the door with often a simple touch, eliminating the time and effort required for finding your keys.

Better flexibility: it’s easier to give family members or trusted friends a combination code or permission via an app than it is to duplicate a key and hand it over to them. You also have more control.

Advantages of Keyless Entry for Your Car

Keyless entry systems aren’t just for homes; they’re transforming the way we access our vehicles as well. Here are some of the advantages of automotive keyless entry systems:

Hands-free access: say goodbye to fumbling for your keys while holding a bag after shopping. Keyless entry systems like key fobs allow you to unlock your car with the push of a button (and many vehicles these days also let you start the car remotely).

Anti-theft measures: modern keyless entry systems utilize advanced encryptions and changing codes that significantly reduce the risk of theft. It’s possible your insurance company might even give you a discount for having one.

Bonus features: there is added functionality with some keyless auto entry systems, such as vehicle tracking and climate control.

Advantages of Keyless Entry for Your Office

Finally, businesses can improve their security with keyless entry systems. Here are some of the advantages of commercial keyless entry systems:

Access management: it’s easier to control which employees have access to which rooms, since credentials can be activated or deactivated remotely. Instead of having to change locks or retrieve keys, you can simply update the settings of your system.

Activity tracking: you can verify employee activity like logging out and when they exit, which can help you maintain attendance and verify visitor entry times.

Security system integration: many keyless entry systems easily integrate with alarm or surveillance systems, giving you a more comprehensive security solution that safeguards your office space.

Are you protecting your business as well as you can or should? Commercial security is important for all companies, but securing your business is becoming increasingly more important as businesses are seeing higher incidents of crime. The good news is that business owners can be proactive to minimize losses and protect their facilities.

One great place to start with commercial security is your locks. If you’re not using these four types of locks yet, here’s a little information about how each works to help you decide whether they make sense at your business or not.

Commercial Strike

Whether traditional or electronic, your standard commercial lock will feature stronger security ratings than most standard residential locks. The strike fastening on the door projects the lock to secure the door and access can be customized. The features and options on commercial strike locks vary depending on type and manufacturer, so consider seeing your options in person and talking to a professional commercial locksmith for advice about the best lock option for you.

Magnetic Locks

Magnetic locks (or electromagnetic, as they’re sometimes called) feature a unique emergency release capability and are ideal for interior locations. These locks are super durable, as they have no moving parts to wear down. Magnetic locks also offer the advantage of accommodating access controls.

Keyless Entry

Thanks to advances in technology, there are a wide variety of keyless options available today—and many are more affordable than in the past. Entry options for these keyless commercial locks include remote controls, combination keypads, app-based controls, touchscreens and more. Whatever security level you want, a keyless entry lock can provide.

Master Key Systems

Finally, master key systems are the pinnacle of building security and control. These can also vary in features and security levels depending on the system you choose. They range from simple, high-security deadbolts to digital deadbolts that only allow certain keys access depending on the time of day. If you’ve been looking for a way to control who has access to one or multiple rooms in your business, a master key system is the way to go.

If you’re interested in commercial locksmith services or new locks for your business, contact A-1 Locksmith today!

A lot has changed the past seven decades. Gas prices have skyrocketed, music trends have come and gone and we’ve seen more technological advances than we can shake a stick at. Of many technological advancements that have changed in the security world, car keys have, perhaps, experienced the greatest technological evolution over the years. They sure don’t look like their original designs!

As a company that has been around for more than 70 years, we’ve seen how car keys have changed over the years. Let’s look at some technological advancements of car keys and look at the options you have today.

Early Car Key Designs

Believe it or not, early cars didn’t used to have starter keys. There were keys for doors (and keys to lock the ignition) in the 1910s, but there weren’t any keys to start the vehicle itself. It wasn’t until 1949 when the starter mechanism was introduced by Chrysler and the first “car keys” (as we know them today) were created. These Chrysler keys looked a lot like your average house key today and only had one side. Prototypes of “flip keys” were soon developed after that (in the 1950s) and double-sided car keys were manufactured in the 1960s.

Technological Advances

Car keys took a large step forward in the late 1980s with the development of remote entry for doors. Keyless entry fobs would gain mainstream success shortly after that in the 1990s. Another phase of technological advancement happened in the same decade was the invention of laser-cut keys and first (unsuccessful) early versions of proximity keys. Different forms of key cutting and shapes were also developed during the 1990s, but major breakthroughs didn’t occur again until the 2000s.

Car Key Options Today

Vehicle manufacturers started making remotes standard with car keys in the early 2000s and variations have included standalone remotes, integrated remotes and smart keys. Most remotes have the ability to unlock and lock doors, open the trunk and sound the alarm. Keyless vehicle ignition soon followed. Today, there are smart keys with all sorts of technology and the features continue to advance. There are touchscreen keys that connect to smartphone apps and can park the car with no driver, as well as keys that tell you the fuel level, whether the lights are on and more. The future is definitely exciting for car keys!
We hope you enjoyed this short history lesson. Whether you need a new car key or an auto key duplication, A-1 Locksmith is here for you. Drop by any of our Dallas-Fort Worth locations today and we’ll get you a key that meets your needs.

Keys, locks, and deadbolts; oh my! If you’ve been researching security options for your home, business or storage space, you’ve probably noticed there are just a few options to choose from in the lock department. From tried-and-true familiar classics to modern, fancy-dangled systems with more bells and whistles than you can shake a stick at, the wealth of choices can be a bit…confounding.

Want to know which is the best lock for your home? Need the perfect latch for that storage space? Maybe you want extra security for that room that houses your prized ant-hill collection. Well never fear! We at A-1 Locksmith are here to break down some of the most common lock types along with their general uses, pros, and cons, to arm you with some serious safety know-how for your next locksmith service call or lock purchase.

Deadbolts – A Tried and True Classic

If you’ve ever been locked out of your house as a kid, you know the frustration of finding out mom latched the deadbolt on her way out. Deadbolts are standard issue when it comes to home security in most US houses. Deadbolts operate by inserting a key into the lock causing the internal mechanism to turn and shift a bolt from the interior of the door to the exterior, latching into the corresponding bolt hole of the door frame. Inexpensive and commonly used, deadbolts require correct installation to be effective in cases such as forced entry. Properly installed strike plates are an essential element as well as quality locks themselves as cheaper models are susceptible to even the most novice of lock picks.

Multi-Point Door Locks – The Modern Upgrade

Multi-point door locks are an up-and-coming advancement to the typical deadbolt style lock. Instead of one central lock structure, multi-point locks are built into the entire vertical height of your door. This allows for several latching areas along the frame, all controlled by a single keyhole, adding an extra layer of security. Multi-point door locks are typically seen in newer doors and frames and are limited to composite construction since installation inside a wooden door would weaken the structure.

Keyless Entry – Trendy and Hi-Tech

Keyless entry isn’t as much of a locking mechanism as it is a system for use with an existing lock device. Keyless entry locks allow you to enter a code, or in some cases use biometrics such as a fingerprint or key fob, to cause the internal locking mechanism to turn, unlocking your door. Handy and convenient, keyless entry can also be set up with separate codes for various users, great for monitoring employee access or keeping track of when your teenagers come home past their curfew. Keyless entries are only as safe as their codes, however, and sharing of that information from the less security savvy in your group can undermine the security of your entire office, building or residence. Low-quality keyless entry systems also have equally as techy overrides by unscrupulous, would-be thieves.

Padlocks – Portable and Durable Security

For more portable lock needs, padlocks are an excellent way to secure property on the go. From bikes to lockers to storage sheds, padlocks use either a code or key to securely latch the lock arm into the internal mechanism, allowing users to connect to a chain or lock between two pieces of a door mechanism to prevent opening. Padlocks vary in security and users should ensure their system is lock-pick safe and of high-quality metal and materials. While you can buy padlocks at low prices in most home improvement stores, for anything in need of serious security, you should consult with an experienced locksmith about more advanced mechanisms.

Cam Locks – Security with Simplicity

The last of our common types of locks is one which you’ve probably never heard of but have seen and used daily. Cam locks are typically found on drawers, dressers, file cabinets and more. They work by allowing movement or preventing a metal piece on the rear of the lock (the cam) from turning. Cam locks are typically partnered with a strike plate that the cam fits into when turned into the locked position, keeping the drawer or door from opening. Cam locks are generally low security and easily forced open. When properly installed they provide an adequate level of theft deterrence, but not much in the way for a serious would-be thief.

Which Lock is Right for You?

While we’ve given you a brief overview of the most common lock systems, there are many sub categories to choose from in addition to numerous other types of less common locking systems that may fit your security needs. For the best fit for your business, home or property security system, call A-1 for a free consultation. The experienced locksmith professionals can help assess your current locking system and will be able to help you chose the best lock for your job.

It seems as if everywhere you look nowadays technology is bringing added convenience and efficiency to our lives. Household goods from laundry soap to tissues can be ordered with the click of a button. Forget fussing with paper maps or printing or writing out directions; with interactive maps on your phone, turn-by-turn directions are available at the click of a finger. And when it comes to security in places like your vehicle, keyless entry via an electronic lock has gone from an optional accessory to a standard feature, seemingly overnight.

The latest technological advancement to hit the security market has homeowners cautiously optimistic. So called “smart” door locks and doorbell systems promise all the benefits of a fully integrated, hands-free locking and alarm arming and disarming system and are being touted as the greatest advancement to home and business security in decades. While these claims certainly seem attractive, when it comes the safety and security of your most valued possessions, are these locks really as “smart” and secure as they claim?

Different Communication Methods Bring Varying Concerns

Before we can delve into the safety of smart locks and doorbells, it’s important to understand the three main types of technology that most systems operate from. For communicating between a phone based app and your lock, most smart security systems use either Bluetooth, Z-wave and wi-fi. Each of these systems have their plusses and minuses.

For example, both Bluetooth and z-wave are limited by distance, typically within 120 feet or so of the device. Z-Wave and wi-fi both require separate hardware to be stored or plugged in near your smart door lock system and all three systems are powered via battery if not hardwired.

Can Smart Systems Be Compromised

While it seems only natural that customers would be concerned about the integrity of smart, wired, door locks and doorbells given the daily news stories regarding hacking and internet security, in reality smart systems are as safe and secure as traditional locks, if not more so. Most smart systems still have an option for manual entry, and communications with the electronic portion of the device are typically very secured. Another point to consider is that the majority of break ins that are forced entries don’t occur as a result of a picked, or in this case, hacked system but by kicking in windows or doors.

The Bottom Line is all About the Right Product (and Partner)

You may be asking what the benefits are to smart system, or if they really are more useful/safer than traditional door locking systems. The answer to that is: it depends. This is where choosing the right security partner is critical. A qualified and experienced locksmith will be able to evaluate your family or business’ needs and suggest a product that not only adds convenience but also an extra layer of security.

Many intruders will canvas neighborhoods or try out multiple homes, typically by testing whether doors are locked and whether there is visible presence of any alarms. Many smart door lock systems can be monitored remotely, providing information such as whether the deadbolt is engaged and alerting users when a door has been opened or a lock manually disengaged. This can provide many homeowners with peace of mind that their property is safe and secure and won’t end up easy pickings for a would-be thief.

Experienced locksmiths and security professionals, such as those at A-1 Locksmiths, know the ins and outs of all the various smart lock and doorbell systems available on the market. Certain smart locks have known security bugs while others require extensive alteration to existing door structure. A knowledgeable locksmith, independent certified and licensed, has the extensive knowledge and experience necessary to provide this type of information to you, their customer, in order to help select the system that fits your family or business. Whether a traditional deadbolt or a modern smart lock, call A-1 for a consultation for all of your security needs.

Not only do remote keyless entry systems save a vehicle owner time in unlocking a car, but they also provide added security, too. Of course, keyless entry systems also can also help you not lock yourself out of your car, though, don’t feel bad if this still occurs. Keyless entry systems are extremely efficient, are easy to install, and are competitively priced when purchased from the right place. If you’re wondering whether or not you should go the dealership for a remote keyless entry system repair or installation, then there are several compelling reasons why you should choose an independent company instead:

An Independent Company is Often Less Expensive

Using an independent company for remote keyless entry system repair or installation is often much less expensive than going to a dealership. While an auto dealership may lead you to believe that it’s the only one who can install a remote keyless entry system for your vehicle type, the truth is, keyless entry system can be installed in virtually any vehicle. Remote keyless entry systems, remotes, and services are of 25 percent to 50 percent less expensive when obtained from an independent company than from a dealership. If you want to hold onto your hard-earned money, then you deserve the highest-quality service and products at the lowest possible cost.

Dealerships Cross-sell and Upsell

Avoiding the dealership has more benefits than just saving money on a remote keyless entry system repair or installation; dealerships are also notorious for cross-selling (selling you a product that you don’t need) and upselling (selling you a more expensive version of the same product). Dealerships are experts at both of these techniques, and have mastered the art of learning how to get customers, just like yourself, to agree to pay more for something you don’t actually need.

An Independent Business Will Focus On You

Finally, dealerships are often huge enterprises with hundreds, if not thousands, of customers to answer to. Because of this, your needs may not be prioritized like they should be, and a dealership representative may not always give you the extra time and attention you deserve. When you go to a local and independent business for your remote keyless entry system installation or repair needs, however, you can guarantee that customer service will be a top priority.

Consider a Remote Keyless Entry System Today

There are many benefits to a keyless entry system for your vehicle, and the advantages of choosing an independent business over a dealership are endless. To speak with a professional auto locksmith and keyless entry system specialist today, call the professionals at A-1 Locksmith now.

Many of us have, at one point in time, found ourselves locked out of the car we plan on driving home. We fumble around in our pockets and search our bags, only to peer inside of the vehicle and notice that the keys are lying on the dashboard, almost taunting us. Of course, in this situation, we can, at least, reach out to a professional locksmith for help getting back inside.

What happens, however, if you don’t use keys to enter your car, but instead use a key fob or some other sort of keyless entry? Is there any way for you to regain access to the interior of your vehicle?

Don’t worry if you find yourself locked out with keyless entry. To be sure, you’re only one of many individuals throughout the nation who have suffered the same fate.

Key Fobs Not the Answer to Being Locked Out of a Car

Ultimately, key fobs were widely adopted, in part, to ensure that vehicle owners had a much smaller chance of locking themselves out of their cars. Of course, just like a pair of keys, it is fairly easy to accidentally lock a key fob inside of the vehicle. Unlike traditional keys, however, many modern key fobs are often designed to allow for the car to be unlocked as long as they are within a certain range. Here, then, an individual may lock a key fob within the car, yet still open the door due to the fob’s proximity to the computer.

Unfortunately, like anything with batteries, the key fob may eventually fail to work, leaving these vehicle owners locked out. And this certainly is not a rare occurrence; a 2013 report from AAA asserted that millions of motorists still find themselves locked out, even those who utilize smart keys.

As such, it is important to realize that if you have been locked out while using a smart key or key fob, you’re not alone. In this situation, however, it is imperative that you contact a professional locksmith to regain entry immediately.

How A-1 Locksmith Can Help

What’s a key fob? How does it work? Where can I get one? These are the questions we are going to focus majorly on a certain type of security mechanism called the key fob. We will look at how the key fob compares with other security devices and why you should consider getting a key fob for any place that you want to be secure.

As we had briefly mentioned, a key fob is a small security hardware device that has a built in authentication system. Think of a key fob as a computer which is specifically dedicated to ensuring that the right person goes through a certain entry. These are especially useful in places which have important devices such as server rooms or network rooms. Their working is basically electrical but a key fob will also depend on mechanical parts so that it can activate the place where you want to gain access into.

A key fob usually displays access codes which are randomly generated and they always maintain the security by periodically changing the access codes so that it will be difficult for someone to memorize them. This usually happens in about less than a minute. The user will always be forced to authenticate themselves on the fob with a Personal Identification Number and then followed by the display code that would have been displayed on the key fob at that time. This makes the key fob even more secure since the access codes will be a great way of first making sure that it’s a human being that is using the device and not any other thing.

A key fob has proved to be convenient in many scenarios especially in places where security is an issue such as an automobile or industrial site. If you are the type of person who keeps on forgetting keys then a key fob will suit you since you can use it remotely any time that you want to. The speed at which a key fob operates is also fast and thus it doesn’t have to keep you waiting. Despite all these reasons why a key fob would be suitable for your home, it also comes with some downsides. The first downside of a key fob is that you can easily set an alarm without wanting. Also, a key fob is usually small and thus very easy to lose.

All in all, a key fob is all that you need to keep a place secure and the interesting thing about a key fob is that you can find them in many places. Call A-1 Locksmith today to see how you can use a key fob for your car, home or business.
